No Tongues
Blending acoustic experimentation and electronic rituals, the No Tongues quartet’s unique sound serves an immersive and original universe.
After the universality of Voies du Monde and the specifically Guyanese adventure of Voies de l’Oyapock, No Tongues’ music blends with the here and now (ICI).
Their new creation is based on a collective effort to gather sounds and voices, revealing the richness and beauty of the world that lies within ear’s reach.
The sound of drizzle on a skylight, the beep of a paw patrol phone, a jogger, a faucet, the oven before pizza, a high speed train, children’s voices, a belt sander, the polyrhythmic drops of a wet sweater dripping…
ICI, a new opus released in November 2022, opens up aethetic gaps in the band’s identity, notably with the arrival of electric and electronic sounds when beforehand everything was produced acoustically. It bears witness to an ICI that is both intimate and open to the world, as well as to a need for expiatory vibrations and ritual sounds in order to heal, fight and share.
This band of musicians is driven by their commitment to seeking their place in sound, their role as humans thrown into a crazy reality, with their instruments, their ears and the honesty of their awakened presence as their only weapons.
On stage, bodies engage in sound research that is sometimes disconcerting for the audience. The bass clarinet becomes a drum, the trumpet a modular synthesizer, the double bass a drum kit. An individual system for launching the collected sounds gives each musician the possibility of surprising their comrades, changing the structure of the piece, provoking the renewal of musical forms, adapting to the ICI of each venue, while retaining the musical effectiveness characteristic of No Tongues.
It’s an invitation to slow down time, to continue imagining and dreaming !
No Tongues remains unique in the current landscape, providing an evocative force of perfect originality.
– Citizen Jazz –
Radical and poetic, the four Nantes-based members of No Tongues are adventurers of sound. Between a child’s gurgle and a dog’s sabbath, a buzzing transhumance and a Celtic procession, they orchestrate noisy, bewitching rituals of everyday life, where the ancestral chants of shamanic guests pierce through.
– Anne Berthod / Télérama –
These ritualistic tracks take listeners on journeys between media listening, ecstasy and trance.
– Hémisphère Son –
This hybrid band has the incredible luxury of going in all directions.
